One of the most important parts of ageing well is staying socially connected, as loneliness and isolation can have devastating effects on social, physical, and mental wellbeing.
For most older people, staying connected means having to make an ongoing effort to learn new technologies, including the ever-updating smartphones.
Keeping up can feel daunting, which is why Health Promotion Team Leader Kristen Beardsmore has developed a friendly and approachable four-week course on smartphones at Age Concern Otago.
“A smartphone has the potential to change your life in many ways,” said Kristen. Here are seven ways you can use your smartphone to support your wellbeing:
Stay connected with family and friends
Find local clubs and events on social media
Maintain your health with telehealth video calls
Set reminders for daily medication and exercise
Get weather updates, road closures, and other news
Learn new hobbies and skills with YouTube tutorials
Order your shopping online from anywhere
Kristen’s SilverTech Smartphone Courses are designed for those aged 65 and older.
Each course includes four weekly sessions in Dunedin or Mosgiel.
The next courses begin in February, so get in touch today on 03 479 3054 or emailing kristen@ageconcernotago.co.nz
