Finding a [new] forever home in your 80s

By Laura Mckinney, Nidd Realty Dunedin

When Joan and Gordon retired to Waihola in the 2000s, they never imagined that one day they'd be moving again.

But when health troubles struck at the beginning of 2022, they found themselves wanting to live a little closer to town. They were worried about the prospect of doing it all on their own—after all, it had been 22 years since they'd last moved property.

This is when they turned to us.

They had concerns about feeling rushed and overwhelmed, and they couldn’t buy the next home without selling their current one. They also didn't want to be without a roof over their heads while they were moving from one place to the next.

Our role was to explain all the options, what was happening in the market, and what the best outcomes would be for them. First, we mapped out their action plan and made sure it was one that minimised the overwhelming aspects of moving.

After a quick search, we helped them find a dream home in Mosgiel that suited their needs. We guided them to an offer that was subject to the sale of their home.

It took careful planning and research on our part and cooperation from Joan and Gordon, but within six weeks from start to finish, Joan and Gordon had marketed and sold their current house with us and set a date to move into the new home they had chosen.

We managed to achieve the financial outcome needed to purchase the next property and match the settlement dates. Throughout the entire process, we had a great relationship with Joan and Gordon that allowed us to work together with them as a team and explain every step, always keeping their best interests at heart. They said working with us made it easy.

Joan and Gordon are currently settling into their new home in Mosgiel. They love being close to everything they need while still having the freedom and independence of living on their own terms. Here’s what they said about their experience:

“Laura's enthusiasm for her profession was evident. She worked so hard to ensure the best outcome for us, and at the same time developed a relationship of trust with the prospective buyers. We have loved Laura's dynamic personality. Working with her has been fun.”
